Flooding is one of the most destructive calamities that any homeowner could experience. Damages caused by flood can be generally serious and extensive. Whenever your house is affected by flood, the first level of your home, and especially your basement if you have one, gets damaged and needs immediate water removal. Water damage to the very portion of your house can cost you a lot. Basement water damage is known to cause cracks in the base of your house, ruin your valuable possessions, cause mold – and the list goes on. The first step in water removal is to pump out the dirty water from your home. Before you proceed with the task however, you must know that flooded water is an environment for bacteria, viruses and various hazardous microorganisms. They are known to pose health threats to you and your family. Hence, you should wear the necessary gears.
In case water damage to your home is serious, then getting the help of professionals would be a wise idea. You may not aware of the dangers hiding in the water, but professionals are. One of the major advantages of hiring professionals is that they work efficiently and quickly to reduce the intensity of the damages. With the perfect combination of trained individuals and usage of proper equipments, tools and techniques, you can rely on them completely.
If you think that you can easily handle this task by yourself, then you must follow some precautionary measures for yourself and your family members. Use goggles, rubber gloves and rubber boots during the activity. It would not be a good idea if you just blindly go through the water removal work according to your instincts and limited knowledge. Water removal might take days to complete and that could be really annoying. The work may even take weeks to be completed. Hiring a specialist can significantly lessen this timeframe for you.
In doing a water removal, you are facing two kinds of risk – risk on your properties and the risks on your health that you may encounter while doing the process. In an event like this, it’s understandable that you want to completely remove all water inside your premises. But you also have to take note the possibilities of more damages when the process is done in a wrong way. Hiring a water removal specialist is a smart move if the cost of the service outweighs the amount of properties you want to save.

An Earth-friendly Mold Removal Method
April 1, 2009
There are plenty of mold removal companies listed in the phonebook and online. These companies use different methods of mold removal but the most common method used is using chemicals to kill the molds. There are various types of chemicals used in this process. Some of them are not exactly earth-friendly or safe to human health. This is why some chemicals used by some mold removal companies are not allowed in certain states.
One technology used in mold removal that is guaranteed safe for the environment and human health is the use of heat. One company uses the patented technology called Thermapureheat. Thermapureheat raises the temperature in areas of the home affected by molds to kill the molds. The process is clean and odorless and can kill not just molds but also bed bugs, dust mites, bacteria and other microorganisms. The reason this process if earth-friendly is because it does not use chemicals that are harmful to the environment.
Using heat to kill bacteria and other microorganisms is not entirely a new concept. Using heat to kill microorganisms has been around for a long time and is the same concept discovered by Louis Pasteur in the 1860s.
Different types of molds and other microorganisms die at specific temperatures and specific length of exposure to the temperature. There are molds that die at 140 degrees Fahrenheit. There are molds that die between 145 degrees Fahrenheit and 150 Fahrenheit. Wood fungi die at 151 degrees Fahrenheit. Other organisms that can die from heat are viruses like E.Coli, Anthrax, Smallpox and other hazardous bacteria. Thermapureheat can also be used to kill flour beetle, adult German cockroach, dry wood termite nymphs and argentine ants. The technicians will evaluate the types of molds and microorganisms present in your home and apply the necessary heat at the duration by which the specific temperature should be applied.
This mold removal method is not just used during water damage restoration but can also be used to treat whole structures such as hotels, school buildings and other infrastructures where there may be hidden mold and microorganisms.
The process allows the contractor to kill microorganisms without the need to remove furnishings and other items from the room/building. This can definitely save homeowners and building administrators time and money. The method is considered as pasteurization of buildings and is one of the safest methods for mold removal. The best thing about this mold removal technology is how homeowners, tenants, and guests can use the room/building right after the procedure. There is no need to wait for mold removal chemicals to dissipate.

The Art of Water Damage Restoration
March 16, 2009
When a home floods, the last thing a homeowner would think of is how well water damage restoration is done. All that is important for the one affected is that the job gets done. However, this should not be the case as there should be an appreciation for the way a house is returned to its original state. Understanding the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes in water damage restoration is the only way for it to be considered with the immediacy and attention it deserves.
Water damage restoration is needed in situations where a home is affected by flooding. When water enters the home or any part of it, it puts the area in a state of disarray. Items can be damaged and the structure itself can be ruined. When this happens, water damage restoration is done. It is the process of drying, disinfecting, and repairing the affected parts. Its extent is dictated by the amount of damage sustained by flooded part of the room.
While most of the procedures used in water damage restoration are straightforward, there is still some amount of intuition involved. There are some important decisions that need to be made to ensure that the water damage restoration is done in the best way possible.
Knowing when to call a professional
There is no guidebook which specifies when a water damage restoration company is made. There are factors that you need to consider when making the choice to call one. You need to think about how big, and in some cases, how small the damage, the amount of money you are willing to spend, and the time it will take for the repairs. Once you do figure out your course of action, you will then have to deal with another set of questions. If you are going to hire a professional, you need to know which one. If you won’t, what do you do? When it comes to flooding, there are choices that are not always easy to make. Trust your common sense and never underestimate the power of conducting research to avoid further trouble.
Knowing when to throw something out
The repair of a flooded area will usually suffer some casualties. Rugs, carpets, wallpaper are only some of the items that are prone to irreparable damage. If you find yourself in the middle of a flood-soaked room, you will have to choose which of your things you can still have cleaned and which ones are bound for the trash bin. It is a known fact that people can be attached to their belongings, even though it is denied, so you may have to do a lot of thinking when it comes to sorting the trash from the rest. Some items, even though they still look good, should be thrown out immediately because they are too dangerous to use. Things that are used by children and the elderly should just be discarded after a flood.
As in any situation in life, water damage restoration also requires some knowledge and smart decision making to be able to restore your home the best possible way.

During winter months, be on constant lookout for snow condition of lakes, rivers, and other such bodies of water near your community or home.
Based on the information that you have, give an estimate just how far the floodwater level would go. As part of a preventive measure, you can carry valuable items such as antiques, paintings, plush carpets, documents, electronic devices and such upstairs or your attic. Another option is to transport them to a place (somewhere outside your town or city) where weather forecast declares will not be reached by hurricane or storm.

Be ready with cleaning equipment, or if you don’t have one at home, having contact numbers of local rental companies would come in handy.
Flood damage can be a tedious and extensive process. If you can get some hands (family, friends, etc) to help you, the job would be less strenuous. Cleaning also with apt and efficient equipments such as moisture meters and wet vacuum cleaners can help speed up the cleaning and drying process. Expect also your home to be electrically charged and contaminated with harmful, allergy-inducing microorganisms. Enter your home with extreme caution and practice precautionary measures. Turn off the main electric source of your home, and wear rubber boots and other protective gears.
Although your main priority is your residential property, flood damage cleanup of areas surrounding your home is just as important. If you have a pool, for instance, or trampoline or playground, clean and disinfect them as you would the interior of your home.
While flood can damage our homes, it can only damage to a certain extent. The damage can be put in check. Learn pre-disaster ways to keep damage to the minimum. Water Removal Process: Restoring the Comfort of Your Home
January 14, 2009
When you discover flood in your home, you need to act immediately by planning on how to remove the water from your property without undue delay. Flood water is very dirty since it contains all kinds of bacteria and organic materials that may cause various illnesses. It is not only enough to remove the water but you must properly clean, disinfect and dry every surface and item that came in contact with the flood water.
The first phase of a water removal activity is to eliminate the water from your property or premises. The water accumulation could be due to a recent rain or storm, a sewage backup problem or a busted water pipe. Whatever the cause, fix the source of the problem first to stop water from continuously coming into the house.
Remove the water through a wet vacuum pump. Do the removal at a regular rate especially if the water is several feet high. Do take care of your wound or open skin lesions; make sure that they do not come in contact with the dirty flood water. When you have successfully removed the water, the next phase of the water removal activity is to clean the affected area thoroughly by brushing every surface with warm soapy water. Rinse all the suds away by using clean water.
Every water removal procedure calls for the disinfecting of the contaminated area to make it safe for living in again. Use chlorine bleach or any commercial disinfectant to kill disease causing bacteria that cannot be removed by merely brushing the affected surfaces with soap and water. To make your disinfecting task a little easier, make use of a bottle sprayer to administer the disinfectant. Leave it to dry on surfaces as is. There is no need to wipe it off because if you do, the effectiveness of this water removal phase will not be realized.
Next on your water removal activity list is to dry the affected area. Open windows and doors to allow airflow. Turn on fans to circulate the air and use dehumidifiers to absorb moisture. You may only start using your house or any part of your house that was recently flooded if they are properly and thoroughly dried.
Water removal procedures do not just pertain to removing water, cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces. Water removal includes the ensuring that your kitchen is thoroughly clean and safe. Make sure that every food item that was exposed to the flood water and not sealed properly is thrown away. Wash all eating utensils and cooking paraphernalia. Boil fork, spoons and knives. If you have any wooden chopping boards or items used for preparing food, it is advisable that you throw them away. Wood is a very porous material and spores from microbes could penetrate it deeply. No amount of cleaning or disinfecting could totally eradicate the contamination of wood. Replace wooden utensils with plastic ones which could easily be cleaned or treated once it becomes unclean. Properly dry everything after cleaning and disinfecting to avoid mold and other secondary problems of flooding.
All these steps should be done with the end goal in mind of restoring your home to its safe, dry, and comfortable state.
How a Home Owner Should Go about Flood Damage Cleanup
December 26, 2008
If action is not taken in time flood water can damage your property beyond repair. As a home owner it is up to you to take action and start flood damage cleanup as soon as possible. The first step is to access the amount of damage done by the flood and determine what can be saved during the flood damage cleanup process. During this assessment you must also measure the amount of water that is on your property along with how much of your property has been covered by this water. You will also need to track down the source of the flood and shut it down. If water has been left on your property for a while it can begin to seep into your concrete walls and weaken them. You should also take all safety precautions while entering your property to access flood damage cleanup possibilities.
The first thing you should remember about flood damage cleanup is to know from where to start. You should start from a location that has the most water. The first step is to clear the water out, before you start drying your property. Pull out anything that has been saved into the open, before you begin to pump the water out. Furniture like sofas, tables and mattresses, should take a few days to dry if left out in the open. You will need to however keep a close eye on them to see if mould doesn’t begin to appear. Water also tends to leave a stench on your property.
Water should be pumped out of your property and directly into a drain. Use a high pressure pump to draw the water out of every room and crevice. Once you have used the pump to its maximum potential, there may still be dampness and some water lying around. Now starts the hardest part of flood damage cleanup, it will require that you swab the water out of your home. Once your floors are dry, you should then start the drying process. Don’t start by using a blow dryer or other drying equipment, as it can cause your property to crack. The first step is to leave all doors and windows open, take out the carpet and leave it in sunlight. After a day or two your rooms should be dry.
Now that your property is dry you can start the process of repairing your property after flood damage cleanup. You might need to repaint as well as repair the concrete walls in your property. Make sure which walls have become weak by tapping them slightly, if you hear a hollow should it means they need to be replaced. Call in a contractor and start getting the job done, before mould start to set in. Always enlist the help of an experienced professional. Flood damage cleanup is not difficult but you must know how to go about it. The wrong moves can weaken the structure of your property forever.
Flooded Basement: The Aftermath of Hurricanes
December 20, 2008
There may be a series of factors that is responsible for a flooded basement to occur. And here we will point out such situation arising from the rage of hurricane.
Hurricanes are very powerful characterized by violent strong winds and heave rains. When they hit the land, they will cause extreme damage via their smashing winds, torrential rains and of course flooding with huge waves at times crashing at shore. Such violence when hitting the walls of our homes or even just the milder version of its breeze will create leaks in the walls that will seem to be so impervious to water.
If for example you are out driving your car, try to open up your car window and let your hand get hit by some of the rain drops. Then and there you will realize just how hard they can hit your hand even when you are driving at a slow speed of say 25 to 30 miles per hour.
The most common entry point of waters into the masonry structure is the vertical mortar joints in brick, concrete block, and stone. Hurricanes will lead to flooded basement in this way and overall will create a rather complicated situation for your home. Even though you can’t see any cracks where this mortar meets up however lots of water will penetrate here. If your builder has not provided you a system for the collection of the waters they can be redirected to the exterior and leaking can occur.
In a situation of a flooded basement, the water enters the basement and the whole area looks like a pond of risk for infections, source of strong odors and many more complicated problems. Removing the water and drying out the walls from the basement can then be sealed in a very effective two-step process by using water-based products. This will involve the application of clear penetrating silane-siloxane water repellant and this will coat the basement’s wall as a whole. Two coats of this should be applied with a gap of about 30 minutes from each other.
When the water repellant is applied then a wall joint sealer may then be applied. This is a milky product which has the consistency of canned gravy before it is even heated. When this product is applied as a thin coat of layer over the mortar joints and a portion of the brick, it will clearly dry. This product can bridge cracks up to 1/8th inch especially when applied correctly.
Flooded basement can sometimes be a result of the water that falls onto the roof and the land collectively enters the basement and is continually worsening. An example would be that if 4.5 inches of rain hit the house during a storm and the roof area and combined yard have an area of one-half acre then the rainfall that is dropping onto the house would be a total of about 61,096 gallons of water.
It is empirical to capture all the roof water by using gutters and downspouts to do away with the problem of a flooded basement situation. Other municipalities have a facility where you are required to redirect the storm water to a special storm water system which then retains it and slowly releases it over time to the natural streams and rivers in the area.
Another solution to a flooded basement problem would be to have an underground gutter system. It will be capable of collecting any subsurface and surface water that is passing through and on top of the soil.
If you take heed of all the above tips, then you can deal with flooded situation and can avoid such problem happening in the future again.
